Hansotia met a Portuguese man who was rolling and selling cigars named after Nepalese warriors called Gurkha soldiers. The former chairman and CEO of Gurkha was fascinated by the art and decided to purchase all the man's cigars and the brand for only $149, thinking the cigars would be the perfect gift for his family's business clients. Hansotia's family was already successful in the luxury watch industry, prompting him to pursue an entrepreneurial journey. 

Inexperienced about the cigar industry, Hansotia studied the market and tried to determine a way to break through. He started distributing cigars in the duty-free markets sometime in 1990 and sold the first three brands (Toro, Churchill, and Torpedo) for $14 and $17 apiece. The cigars were packaged in individual glass tubes, in sticks and in traditional boxes. Fortunately, it was a hit and quickly sold out. Hansotia, who was already used to selling luxury goods, already had an eye for the finest things in life. It was during this time that he realized there were no super-premium cigars in the market yet, and he found a way to market Gurkha as an ultra-premium cigar. The boom in the cigar industry also contributed to Gurkha's success. 

Today, the South Florida-based company produces millions of cigars annually and has over 105 brands in the market.
