The Fuente Fuente Opus X Heaven and Earth El Escorpion Maduro is a medium-full perfecto measuring 6.38 x 50 from Fuente's OpusX "Heaven and Earth" series. It is a Dominican puro, with a dark Dominican maduro wrapper grown at Chateau de la Fuente over Dominican binder and filler, and it is made in small numbers by Carlos "Carlito" Fuente at Tabacalera A. Fuente y Cia in Santiago, Dominican Republic.
Wrapper and Blend
The Heaven and Earth cigars are built on wrapper grown at Chateau de la Fuente, the Fuente family farm near Bonao where OpusX wrapper is grown. El Escorpion comes in two versions: a natural and this maduro, which takes the darker, sweeter maduro leaf over the same all-Dominican core. Fuente does not publish a breakdown of the binder and filler beyond their Dominican origin.
Format and Size
El Escorpion is a round perfecto, 6.38 inches long with a 50 ring gauge (about 0.78 inches across at its widest). The head tapers to a sharp point and the foot closes to a small nipple, so the first draws come through a narrow opening before the cigar opens up to its full ring. It is not box-pressed.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the El Escorpion Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are dark chocolate, black pepper, leather, cedar, earth, cinnamon and toast. Reviews of the El Escorpion describe a peppery start, a thicker smoke with more body and leather as it burns into the full ring, and cedar and cinnamon toward the finish; the maduro wrapper adds dark chocolate and earth.
Line History and Production
The cigar is named for Scorpio, the birth sign of Arturo Fuente, Carlito's grandfather, who was born on November 18. The name also ties to the scorpion statue at Chateau de la Fuente. El Escorpion is part of Fuente's aged program of OpusX "Heaven and Earth" releases, which carry a secondary band showing the year the cigar was rolled. Like many of Fuente's limited OpusX releases, a portion of sales goes to the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation, which supports children and families in the Bonao region.

This is a collector's cigar: a good fit for OpusX fans who want the maduro side of the Heaven and Earth series, or for a milestone smoke worth saving.
