Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series cigars with their numbered bands

Padron 1964 Anniversary

What Is the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Series?

In 1994 Padrón turned 30, and Jorge Padrón proposed a pricier line made from aged tobacco to mark it. The result was named for the year the company opened in Miami. Every 1964 Anniversary cigar is made from tobacco aged four years, and Padrón introduced the line as a box-pressed series, so every size has that familiar square profile. Each cigar carries a one-piece band with its own serial number, which Padrón uses to guard against counterfeits.

The blend is a Nicaraguan puro: sun-grown Nicaraguan wrapper in natural or maduro, with Nicaraguan binder and filler, made at Padrón's Tabacos Cubanica factory in Estelí. It sits between the Thousand Series and the 1926 Serie in price and in aging. In 2021 Cigar Aficionado named the 1964 Torpedo its Cigar of the Year.

Natural or Maduro 1964?

Both wrappers sit over the same four-year tobacco, so the decision is about flavor, not strength. The natural 1964 gives cocoa, cedar, roasted nuts and coffee, often with milk chocolate or cream in the smaller sizes and a light pepper finish. The maduro is darker: dark chocolate, espresso, leather and earth, with molasses sweetness in sizes like the Exclusivo, Principe and Monarca. A lot of regulars keep one of each in the same size.

Strength and Flavor

We rate the whole line medium to full. It is a balanced cigar with more weight than the Thousand Series and a little less than the 1926. Slimmer sizes like the Superior and Corona give more of the wrapper's character, while thicker sizes like the No. 4 and Imperial smoke slower.

Finding Your Size

If you're new to the 1964, start with the Exclusivo. At 5.5 x 50 it is a good reference point for the rest of the line. For a quick smoke, try the Principe or Hermoso. The Torpedo and Piramides suit anyone who likes a tapered head, and the "A" and Diplomatico are for a long evening. The two tubos, the Soberano and Presidente, travel well.

To try several at once, the 1964 Anniversary Series Sampler holds the "A", Diplomatico, Imperial, Torpedo and Exclusivo; you'll find it with our other Padrón samplers. Ready for a step up? The 1926 Serie uses tobacco aged a year longer.

Caring for Your 1964s

Store them at 65 to 70 percent humidity. Give cigars a week or two to settle after delivery before you smoke them.
