Description

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Soberano Tubos Maduro is a medium-to-full box-pressed robusto measuring 5 x 52 from Padrón's 1964 Anniversary Series. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged four years and made at Padrón's own factory in Nicaragua. Each cigar comes in a square aluminum tube, shaped to fit the box press.

Wrapper and Blend

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Soberano Tubos Maduro uses a sun-grown Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón and aged four years before rolling.

The maduro wrapper gives the Soberano a darker, oilier look and pulls the mocha and dried fruit reviewers describe toward dark chocolate; the same blend is also offered with the natural wrapper.

Format and Size

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Soberano Tubos Maduro measures 5 inches long with a 52 ring gauge, about 0.81 inches in diameter. It is the shorter of the two tubed 1964 sizes, next to the 6 x 50 Presidente, and shares its 5 x 52 dimensions with the untubed Belicoso, which has a pointed head.

Strength and Flavor Profile

TRP lists the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Soberano Tubos Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are mocha, dark chocolate, prune, cinnamon, coffee, red pepper, earth. The Cigar Authority described red pepper on the retrohale early, cinnamon and coffee in the second third, and a long coffee finish.

Line History and Production

Padrón introduced the 1964 Anniversary Series in 1994 to mark 30 years since José O. Padrón founded the company in Miami. He and his son Jorge built it from older tobaccos and the box press José remembered from Cuba, and each cigar carries an individually numbered band. Padrón unveiled the Soberano and Presidente at InterTabac in 2016 as the first 1964 Anniversary sizes in tubes, square to suit the box press. They went to Tobacconists' Association of America retailers first, then to all Padrón retailers after the July 2017 IPCPR trade show.

Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Soberano Tubos Maduro suits smokers who want a robusto-length 1964 they can carry, since the tube protects the cigar on the go. It pairs well with espresso or dark roast, and with bourbon, rye whiskey or aged rum. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity.
