Description

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Natural is a medium-to-full box-pressed toro measuring 6.5 x 46 from Padrón's 1964 Anniversary line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan sun-grown natural wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, made from tobacco aged four years. It pairs a 6.5-inch length with a moderate 46 ring gauge.

Wrapper and Blend

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Natural uses a Nicaraguan sun-grown natural wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos from the Estelí, Condega and Jalapa regions. Padrón ages all tobacco used in the 1964 Anniversary Series for four years before rolling.

The sun-grown natural wrapper is lighter in color than the maduro and leans toward cocoa, cedar and nuttier notes; the same blend is also offered with a maduro wrapper.

Format and Size

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Natural measures 6.5 inches long with a 46 ring gauge, about 0.72 inches in diameter, and is box-pressed into a squared shape. It is a slim toro, sharing the 6.5-inch length of the 42-ring Superior but with a fuller 46 ring gauge, and is slimmer than the 6 x 54 Imperial.

Strength and Flavor Profile

TRP lists the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Natural as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are cocoa powder, macadamia nut, dark chocolate, sour cherry, cedar, black pepper. Cigar Aficionado described macadamia nut, cocoa powder and sour cherry carrying through to the finish.

Line History and Production

Padrón introduced the 1964 Anniversary Series in 1994 to mark the company's 30th anniversary, naming it for the year José O. Padrón began making cigars in Miami. It launched as a box-pressed series when most cigars were round. Each cigar carries an individually numbered band that guards against counterfeits. Cigar Aficionado rated the natural Monarca 93 points in 2021, describing a box-pressed toro with notes of macadamia nut, cocoa powder and sour cherry.

Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Natural suits smokers who want an aged, all-Nicaraguan blend. It works for smokers who want a long smoke without the bulk of a 50-plus ring gauge. It pairs well with cappuccino or café con leche, and with bourbon, aged rum or cognac. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
