Description

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Presidente Tubos Natural is a medium-to-full box-pressed toro measuring 6 x 50 from Padrón's 1964 Anniversary Series. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan natural wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged four years and made at Padrón's own factory in Nicaragua. Each cigar comes in a square aluminum tube, shaped to fit the box press.

Wrapper and Blend

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Presidente Tubos Natural uses a sun-grown Nicaraguan natural wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón and aged four years before rolling.

The natural wrapper keeps the Presidente on the cedar and nut side of the line's profile, with cocoa and pepper underneath; the same blend is also offered with a maduro wrapper.

Format and Size

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Presidente Tubos Natural measures 6 inches long with a 50 ring gauge, about 0.78 inches in diameter. It is the larger of the two tubed 1964 sizes; the Soberano is a shorter 5 x 52, and the Imperial offers the same 6-inch length at a 54 ring without the tube.

Strength and Flavor Profile

TRP lists the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Presidente Tubos Natural as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are cocoa, cedar, earth, roasted nuts, black pepper, coffee. Reviewers describe cocoa and earth with pepper on the retrohale, building through the second half.

Line History and Production

Padrón introduced the 1964 Anniversary Series in 1994 to mark 30 years since José O. Padrón founded the company in Miami. He and his son Jorge built it from older tobaccos and the box press José remembered from Cuba, and each cigar carries an individually numbered band. Padrón unveiled the Presidente and Soberano at InterTabac in 2016 as the first 1964 Anniversary sizes in tubes, square to suit the box press. They went to Tobacconists' Association of America retailers first, then to all Padrón retailers after the July 2017 IPCPR trade show.

Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Presidente Tubos Natural suits smokers who want a 1964 toro they can carry, since the tube protects the cigar on the go. Tubed cigars can swell and stick, so remove them from the tubes for long-term storage. It pairs well with espresso or cortado, and with bourbon, aged rum or cognac. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity.
