Description
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Exclusivo Maduro is a medium-to-full box-pressed robusto measuring 5.5 x 50 from Padrón's 1964 Anniversary line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, made from tobacco aged four years. It is one of the most decorated sizes in the line.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Exclusivo Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos from the Estelí, Condega and Jalapa regions. Padrón ages all tobacco used in the 1964 Anniversary Series for four years before rolling.
The maduro wrapper gives this version its darker, oilier look and a sweeter, roasted side of the profile; the same blend is also offered with the sun-grown natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Exclusivo Maduro measures 5.5 inches long with a 50 ring gauge, about 0.78 inches in diameter, and is box-pressed into a squared shape. It is a long robusto, half an inch longer than a standard 5 x 50, and sits between the 4.5 x 46 Principe and the 5 x 52 Belicoso in the line.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Exclusivo Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are cocoa, dark chocolate, espresso, earth, molasses, cedar, black pepper. Cigar Aficionado singled out the rich Padrón cocoa flavor of the maduro wrapper in a complex, balanced smoke.
Line History and Production
Padrón introduced the 1964 Anniversary Series in 1994 to mark the company's 30th anniversary, naming it for the year José O. Padrón began making cigars in Miami. It launched as a box-pressed series when most cigars were round. Each cigar carries an individually numbered band that guards against counterfeits. The Exclusivo is one of the line's most decorated sizes: the maduro was No. 5 in Cigar Aficionado's 2011 Top 25 at 94 points, and the natural scored 93 points in 2019.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Exclusivo Maduro suits smokers who want an aged, all-Nicaraguan blend. It works for smokers who want the most familiar size in the 1964 line, with a smoking time of around an hour. It pairs well with espresso or Cuban coffee, and with bourbon, aged rum or port. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
