Description
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Imperial Maduro is a medium-to-full box-pressed toro measuring 6 x 54 from Padrón's 1964 Anniversary Series. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged four years and made at Padrón's own factory in Nicaragua. Cigar Aficionado rated the Imperial Maduro 93 points in 2020.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Imperial Maduro uses a sun-grown Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón and aged four years before rolling.
The maduro wrapper gives this version its dark, oily look and pushes the profile toward chocolate and sweet toast; Cigar Aficionado called it balanced when it scored it 93 points. The same blend is also offered with the natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Imperial Maduro measures 6 inches long with a 54 ring gauge, about 0.84 inches in diameter. It sits between the slimmer Presidente at 6 x 50 and the No. 4, which takes the line's widest 60 ring gauge to 6.5 inches.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Imperial Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are chocolate, licorice, peanut, dark toast, leather, earth, cocoa powder. Cigar Aficionado described big notes of chocolate with licorice, peanuts and dark toast, an earthy finish and a cocoa-powder sweetness.
Line History and Production
Padrón introduced the 1964 Anniversary Series in 1994 to mark 30 years since José O. Padrón founded the company in Miami. He and his son Jorge built it from older tobaccos and the box press José remembered from Cuba, and each cigar carries an individually numbered band. The Imperial has been part of the line for decades: Padrón lists Cigar Insider and Cigar Aficionado ratings for it from 1999 through 2020. Padrón also packs it in 5-packs in addition to the 25-count box.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Imperial Maduro suits smokers who want a full toro-length smoke at a thicker ring than the Presidente, and it works well as an everyday 1964 for anyone who prefers about 90 minutes or more per cigar. It pairs well with espresso or dark roast, and with bourbon, rye whiskey or aged rum. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
