Description
The Padron 50th Anniversary Refill Maduro is a full-strength box-pressed toro measuring 6.5 x 52 from Padrón's 50th Anniversary line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler aged a minimum of 10 years, and it is the refill box for the numbered 50th Anniversary humidor Padrón released in 2014.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron 50th Anniversary Refill Maduro uses a sun-grown Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, made at Padrón's Tabacos Cubanica factory in Estelí. Padrón created the blend for its 50th anniversary and describes it as full-bodied, complex and balanced, with tobaccos aged at least 10 years.
The maduro wrapper gives this version its darker look and leans the profile toward cocoa and dark chocolate; the same cigar is also made with the natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron 50th Anniversary Refill Maduro measures 6.5 inches long with a 52 ring gauge, about 0.81 inches in diameter. It is box-pressed and is the only size Padrón makes in the 50th Anniversary blend. It is half an inch longer than the box-pressed Family Reserve No. 45 at 6 x 52.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron 50th Anniversary Refill Maduro as full in strength. Its flavor notes are dark chocolate, cocoa, earth, black pepper, cedar, cream, roasted nuts. Reviewers describe cocoa growing through the middle and dark chocolate and cedar in the last third, with strength building toward the end.
Line History and Production
Padrón marked its 50th year in 2014 with a humidor designed by Nelson Alfonso and first shown at that year's IPCPR trade show. Padrón made 1,000 humidors, each holding 50 numbered cigars with red serial numbers matching the humidor.
After that first run, the cigars have been released only in refill boxes of 50, in natural, maduro or a 25 and 25 mix. Refill cigars carry black serial numbers and are not sequentially numbered.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron 50th Anniversary Refill Maduro suits owners restocking a 50th Anniversary humidor and smokers who want an aged Padrón blend in a long box-pressed toro. It pairs well with Cuban coffee or espresso, and with barrel-proof bourbon, aged rum or rye whiskey. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
