Description
The Padron Black PB-97 Maduro is a medium-to-full torpedo measuring 6.75 x 54 from Padrón's Black line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, made at Padrón's own factory in Nicaragua and named for what would have been José O. Padrón's 97th birthday.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Black PB-97 Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Jorge Padrón has described the Black blend as sitting between the Serie 1926 and the Family Reserve, closer to the Family Reserve in fullness.
The maduro wrapper gives this version its darker, oilier look and the sweeter, roasted side of the profile; the same blend is also offered with the natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Black PB-97 Maduro measures 6.75 inches long with a 54 ring gauge, about 0.84 inches in diameter. The tapered torpedo head narrows the draw and concentrates the smoke at the start of the cigar. The PB-99, released in 2025, uses the same length in a thicker 60 ring gauge.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Black PB-97 Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are coffee bean, cocoa nibs, almond, caramel, cedar, black pepper, cherry sweetness. Reviewers describe a medium start that builds toward medium-full by the final third.
Line History and Production
Padrón Black began in 2016 as the José O. Padrón 89 Birthday Blend, a corona gorda made for a single Florida retailer, and later became the name for Padrón's small, occasional releases: trade-show exclusives, Cigar Rights of America sampler cigars and birthday blends. Padrón unveiled the PB-97 at the 2023 PCA Convention and Trade Show in both natural and maduro wrappers and sold it only to retailers who placed orders at the show, with boxes reaching stores in March 2024. Padrón has not published production figures, and the company has described the PB-97 as a one-time release rather than an ongoing line.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Black PB-97 Maduro suits Padrón smokers who already know the 1964 Anniversary and 1926 lines and want a collectible, harder-to-find Black release. It pairs well with espresso or dark roast, and with bourbon, aged rum or rye whiskey. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
