Description
The Padron Family Reserve No. 44 Natural is a full-strength box-pressed torpedo measuring 6 x 52 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan natural wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. It was the first Family Reserve size, released in 2008 for the company's 44th anniversary, and it is the line's only torpedo.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Family Reserve No. 44 Natural uses a Nicaraguan natural wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.
The sun-grown natural wrapper keeps cedar, nuts and spice toward the front; the same size is also made with a maduro wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Family Reserve No. 44 Natural measures 6 inches long with a 52 ring gauge, about 0.81 inches in diameter. It is box-pressed with a tapered, pointed head, the only torpedo in the Family Reserve line. The No. 45 shares the same 6 x 52 dimensions with a flat, rounded cap, and the No. 46 is shorter and thicker at 5.5 x 56.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 44 Natural as full in strength. Its flavor notes are cocoa, roasted nuts, cedar, vanilla, black pepper, leather, earth. Reviewers note the strength building as it burns, with pepper strongest on the retrohale.
Line History and Production
The No. 44 started the line. Padrón released it in 2008 to mark 44 years since José Orlando Padrón opened the company in Miami in 1964, and it set the pattern every later size has followed: a box of 10, natural and maduro wrappers, and tobacco aged 10 years. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Family Reserve No. 44 Natural suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who like a torpedo head that concentrates the smoke, and anyone who wants the size that began the Family Reserve line. It pairs well with espresso or cappuccino, and with bourbon, Cognac or aged rum. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
