Description
The Padron Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro is a full-strength box-pressed toro measuring 6 x 52 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. Padrón released it on September 8, 2009, the company's 45th anniversary.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.
The maduro wrapper gives this version a darker look and shifts the profile toward chocolate and sweeter, roasted notes; the same size is also made with the natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro measures 6 inches long with a 52 ring gauge, about 0.81 inches in diameter. It is box-pressed hard enough to look almost square and has a flat, rounded cap. The No. 44 uses the same 6 x 52 dimensions with a pointed torpedo head, and the No. 96 is a round 5.75 x 52 in the same ring gauge.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro as full in strength. Its flavor notes are dark chocolate, oak, leather, earth, cinnamon, black pepper, espresso. Reviewers find the maduros deeper and sweeter through the middle, with pepper returning late.
Line History and Production
The No. 45 went on sale September 8, 2009, the 45th anniversary of the company José Orlando Padrón founded in Miami in 1964. It used the same 10-year-aged tobacco as the No. 44 but in a straight toro instead of a torpedo, and the No. 45 Maduro was named Cigar Aficionado's No. 1 Cigar of 2009. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who want the longest straight Family Reserve size and a firm box-press in the hand. It pairs well with espresso or mocha, and with barrel-proof bourbon, aged rum or rye whiskey. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
