Description
The Padron Family Reserve No. 46 Natural is a full-strength box-pressed robusto measuring 5.5 x 56 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan natural wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. It went on sale September 8, 2010, for the company's 46th anniversary, and is the thickest of the box-pressed Family Reserve sizes.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Family Reserve No. 46 Natural uses a Nicaraguan natural wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.
The sun-grown natural wrapper keeps cedar, nuts and spice toward the front; the same size is also made with a maduro wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Family Reserve No. 46 Natural measures 5.5 inches long with a 56 ring gauge, about 0.88 inches in diameter. Halfwheel describes it as a robusto extra with a dramatic box-press, and it is the thickest of the box-pressed Family Reserve sizes. The No. 50 is half an inch shorter at 5 x 54, and the No. 45 is longer and slimmer at 6 x 52.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 46 Natural as full in strength. Its flavor notes are cocoa, coffee, roasted nuts, cedar, leather, black pepper, earth. Reviewers note the strength building as it burns, with pepper strongest on the retrohale.
Line History and Production
The No. 46 went on sale September 8, 2010, the company's 46th anniversary. Cigar Aficionado reported at the time that it was made with some of the Padrón family's oldest tobaccos at Tabacos Cubanica in Estelí, and like the earlier sizes it uses tobacco aged around 10 years. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Family Reserve No. 46 Natural suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who like a thicker, shorter cigar with a heavier hand feel than the 6 x 52 sizes. It pairs well with espresso or café con leche, and with aged rum, bourbon or Cognac. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
