Description

The Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Maduro is a full-strength box-pressed robusto measuring 5 x 54 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. Padrón introduced it in 2014 to mark 50 years since the company was founded, the fifth size in the Family Reserve line.

Wrapper and Blend

The Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.

The maduro wrapper gives this version a darker look and shifts the profile toward chocolate and sweeter, roasted notes; the same size is also made with the natural wrapper.

Format and Size

The Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Maduro measures 5 inches long with a 54 ring gauge, about 0.84 inches in diameter. It is box-pressed and is the shortest of the pressed Family Reserve sizes. The No. 85 is slightly longer and slimmer at 5.25 x 50, and the No. 46 is longer and thicker at 5.5 x 56.

Strength and Flavor Profile

TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Maduro as full in strength. Its flavor notes are dark chocolate, espresso, cedar, earth, leather, black pepper, molasses. Reviewers find the maduros deeper and sweeter through the middle, with pepper returning late.

Line History and Production

The No. 50 was shown at the 2014 IPCPR trade show, the same year as the 50th Anniversary humidor, to mark 50 years since José Orlando Padrón founded the company in Miami in 1964. It was the fifth Family Reserve size and brought the line back to anniversary numbering after the No. 85. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.

Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It

The Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Maduro suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who want a short, thick box-pressed robusto from the line. It pairs well with espresso or mocha, and with barrel-proof bourbon, aged rum or rye whiskey. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
