Description
The Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Natural is a full-strength box-pressed robusto measuring 5 x 54 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan natural wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. Padrón introduced it in 2014 to mark 50 years since the company was founded, the fifth size in the Family Reserve line.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Natural uses a Nicaraguan natural wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.
The sun-grown natural wrapper keeps cedar, nuts and spice toward the front; the same size is also made with a maduro wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Natural measures 5 inches long with a 54 ring gauge, about 0.84 inches in diameter. It is box-pressed and is the shortest of the pressed Family Reserve sizes. The No. 85 is slightly longer and slimmer at 5.25 x 50, and the No. 46 is longer and thicker at 5.5 x 56.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Natural as full in strength. Its flavor notes are cedar, coffee, almond, black pepper, cocoa, leather, earth. Reviewers note the strength building as it burns, with pepper strongest on the retrohale.
Line History and Production
The No. 50 was shown at the 2014 IPCPR trade show, the same year as the 50th Anniversary humidor, to mark 50 years since José Orlando Padrón founded the company in Miami in 1964. It was the fifth Family Reserve size and brought the line back to anniversary numbering after the No. 85. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Family Reserve No. 50 Natural suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who want a short, thick box-pressed robusto from the line. It pairs well with espresso or medium roast, and with bourbon, aged rum or Cognac. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
