Description
The Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Maduro is a full-strength box-pressed robusto measuring 5.25 x 50 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. Released in October 2011, it was the first Family Reserve size named for José Orlando Padrón's birthday rather than a company anniversary.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.
The maduro wrapper gives this version a darker look and shifts the profile toward chocolate and sweeter, roasted notes; the same size is also made with the natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Maduro measures 5.25 inches long with a 50 ring gauge, about 0.78 inches in diameter. It is box-pressed and is the slimmest size in the Family Reserve line. The No. 50 is a touch shorter and thicker at 5 x 54, and the No. 46 steps up to 5.5 x 56.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Maduro as full in strength. Its flavor notes are dark chocolate, leather, oak, hay, black pepper, earth, plum. Reviewers find the maduros deeper and sweeter through the middle, with pepper returning late.
Line History and Production
The No. 85 shipped in October 2011 and honored José Orlando Padrón's 85th birthday, the first Family Reserve named for a birthday instead of a company anniversary. It is made at Tabacos Cubanica S.A. with tobacco aged 10 years, and it ships in boxes of 10 stacked in two layers of five. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Maduro suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who want the shortest smoking time and slimmest ring in the Family Reserve line. It pairs well with Cuban coffee or espresso, and with aged rum, bourbon or rye whiskey. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
