Description
The Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Natural is a full-strength box-pressed robusto measuring 5.25 x 50 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan natural wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. Released in October 2011, it was the first Family Reserve size named for José Orlando Padrón's birthday rather than a company anniversary.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Natural uses a Nicaraguan natural wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.
The sun-grown natural wrapper keeps cedar, nuts and spice toward the front; the same size is also made with a maduro wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Natural measures 5.25 inches long with a 50 ring gauge, about 0.78 inches in diameter. It is box-pressed and is the slimmest size in the Family Reserve line. The No. 50 is a touch shorter and thicker at 5 x 54, and the No. 46 steps up to 5.5 x 56.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Natural as full in strength. Its flavor notes are cedar, hay, cocoa, roasted nuts, black pepper, leather, earth. Reviewers note the strength building as it burns, with pepper strongest on the retrohale.
Line History and Production
The No. 85 shipped in October 2011 and honored José Orlando Padrón's 85th birthday, the first Family Reserve named for a birthday instead of a company anniversary. It is made at Tabacos Cubanica S.A. with tobacco aged 10 years, and it ships in boxes of 10 stacked in two layers of five. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Family Reserve No. 85 Natural suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who want the shortest smoking time and slimmest ring in the Family Reserve line. It pairs well with espresso or cappuccino, and with bourbon, Cognac or aged rum. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
