Description
The Padron Family Reserve No. 96 Maduro is a full-strength round toro measuring 5.75 x 52 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. It marks what would have been José Orlando Padrón's 96th birthday and, like the No. 95, is round rather than box-pressed.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Family Reserve No. 96 Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.
The maduro wrapper gives this version a darker look and shifts the profile toward chocolate and sweeter, roasted notes; the same size is also made with the natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Family Reserve No. 96 Maduro measures 5.75 inches long with a 52 ring gauge, about 0.81 inches in diameter. Padrón and halfwheel call the format a robusto extra; by its dimensions it sits with the toros. It is round like the No. 95, while the No. 45 uses the same 52 ring gauge in a longer, box-pressed 6 x 52.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 96 Maduro as full in strength. Its flavor notes are black pepper, cream, earth, dry wood, cocoa, mineral, espresso. Reviewers find the maduros deeper and sweeter through the middle, with pepper returning late.
Line History and Production
The No. 96 was shown at the July 2022 PCA Convention & Trade Show and shipped to stores in April 2023, again sold first to retailers who attended the show. It marks what would have been José Orlando Padrón's 96th birthday. Padrón describes the blend as full-bodied and made with tobacco aged 10 years. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Family Reserve No. 96 Maduro suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who want a round Family Reserve with a more standard ring gauge than the 60-ring No. 95. It pairs well with Cuban coffee or espresso, and with aged rum, bourbon or rye whiskey. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
