Description

The Padron 4000 Maduro is a medium-to-full box-pressed toro measuring 6.5 x 54 from Padrón's Thousand Series, which Padrón calls the Padrón Series. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all sun-grown, aged at least two and a half years, and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí.

Wrapper and Blend

The Padron 4000 Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown by the Padrón family in Nicaragua. The numbers denote size, not a different blend.

The maduro wrapper gives this version its darker, oilier look and the sweeter, roasted side of the profile; the natural 4000 shares the same size, binder and filler.

Format and Size

The Padron 4000 Maduro measures 6.5 inches long with a 54 ring gauge, about 0.84 inches in diameter. The 4000 is the longest of the six numbered sizes. The 7000 is shorter at 6.25 inches but thicker at 60 ring gauge, and the 3000 offers the same blend in a 5.5 x 52 robusto.

Strength and Flavor Profile

TRP lists the Padron 4000 Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are dark chocolate, coffee, earth, cedar, leather, black pepper. Reviewers describe black pepper and coffee at the start, then earth and cedar, with leather and bittersweet dark chocolate in the middle, extra sweetness from the wrapper late, and the pepper returning near the end.

Line History and Production

Padrón dates the Padrón Series to 1964, the year José Orlando Padrón founded the company in Miami after leaving Cuba. Today it runs to fifteen medium- to full-bodied sizes, from the Corticos to the Magnum, each in natural and maduro; the numbered 2000 to 7000 sizes give it the Thousand Series name. Its tobacco is aged at least two and a half years, against at least four for the 1964 Anniversary Series. The 4000 is regular production at Tabacos Cubanica S.A. in Estelí.

Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It

The Padron 4000 Maduro suits smokers who want an everyday Padrón before moving up to the 1964 Anniversary or 1926 lines. As the longest numbered size, it suits an unhurried evening smoke. It pairs well with espresso or dark roast, and with bourbon, aged rum or tawny port. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
