Description
The Padron Family Reserve No. 95 Maduro is a full-strength round gordo measuring 4.75 x 60 from Padrón's Family Reserve line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged 10 years and rolled at Padrón's own factory in Estelí. It honors what would have been José Orlando Padrón's 95th birthday and was the first Family Reserve size made round rather than box-pressed.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron Family Reserve No. 95 Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the Family Reserve tobacco 10 years and describes the blend as full-bodied.
The maduro wrapper gives this version a darker look and shifts the profile toward chocolate and sweeter, roasted notes; the same size is also made with the natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron Family Reserve No. 95 Maduro measures 4.75 inches long with a 60 ring gauge, about 0.94 inches in diameter. Halfwheel calls the size a petit gordo. It is round, not box-pressed, and it is both the shortest and the thickest Family Reserve. The No. 50 is a pressed 5 x 54, and the No. 96 is a round 5.75 x 52.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron Family Reserve No. 95 Maduro as full in strength. Its flavor notes are dark chocolate, espresso, earth, leather, black pepper, clove, molasses. Reviewers find the maduros deeper and sweeter through the middle, with pepper returning late.
Line History and Production
Padrón showed the No. 95 at the 2021 PCA Convention & Trade Show, at first only to retailers who attended, and boxes began shipping in March 2022. The number marks what would have been the 95th birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón, who died in 2017. It was the first Family Reserve made round instead of box-pressed, and halfwheel noted it uses some of the company's most aged tobacco. Each Family Reserve size is numbered for a company anniversary or a birthday of founder José Orlando Padrón.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron Family Reserve No. 95 Maduro suits experienced Padrón smokers who want the fuller, older-tobacco Family Reserve blend. It is a good fit for smokers who like a short, wide ring gauge and a cooler, fuller draw than the pressed sizes. It pairs well with espresso or dark roast, and with bourbon, aged rum or rye whiskey. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
