Description
The Padron 1926 40th Anniversary Series Natural is a medium-to-full box-pressed torpedo measuring 6.5 x 54 from Padrón's 1926 Serie line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan natural wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged five years before blending. It was made in 2004 for the 40th anniversary of Padrón Cigars.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron 1926 40th Anniversary Series Natural uses a sun-grown Nicaraguan natural wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón. Padrón ages the tobacco for the 1926 Serie five years before blending and describes the result as smooth, complex, balanced and full-bodied in flavor.
The natural wrapper is the lighter of the two shades and shows the cedar, nut and cocoa side of the blend; the same size is also offered with a maduro wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron 1926 40th Anniversary Series Natural measures 6.5 inches long with a 54 ring gauge, about 0.84 inches in diameter. It is box-pressed, like every 1926 Serie size except the No. 90. Padrón lists it at 54 x 6 1/2 with a pointed torpedo head. The 80th Anniversary is a quarter inch longer at 6.75 x 54 in a perfecto shape, and the No. 1 shares that 6.75 x 54 size with a regular head.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron 1926 40th Anniversary Series Natural as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are chocolate, earth, baking spice, coffee, cedar, roasted nuts. Reviewers describe chocolate and earth up front, with cedar and roasted nuts coming forward later, and generally place the 1926 Serie a step stronger than Padrón's 1964 Anniversary line.
Line History and Production
Padrón premiered the 1926 Serie in 2002 to mark the 75th birthday of founder José O. Padrón, who was born in 1926; the company itself dates to 1964 in Miami. Padrón made the 40th Anniversary in 2004 to mark 40 years since José O. Padrón founded the company in 1964. Cigar Aficionado named the Padrón Serie 1926 40th Anniversary its Cigar of the Year for 2004. The first release came in hand-painted chests of 40; Padrón still offers the 40-count chest alongside the box of 20 sold here.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron 1926 40th Anniversary Series Natural suits smokers looking for one of the 1926 Serie's anniversary releases and who enjoy a pointed head. It pairs well with an espresso, a cortado or a medium roast, and with bourbon, cognac or an aged rum. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
