Description
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Belicoso Maduro is a medium-to-full box-pressed belicoso measuring 5 x 52 from Padrón's 1964 Anniversary line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, made from tobacco aged four years. It has a tapered head and a box-pressed body.
Wrapper and Blend
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Belicoso Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos from the Estelí, Condega and Jalapa regions. Padrón ages all tobacco used in the 1964 Anniversary Series for four years before rolling.
The maduro wrapper gives this version its darker, oilier look and a sweeter, roasted side of the profile; the same blend is also offered with the sun-grown natural wrapper.
Format and Size
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Belicoso Maduro measures 5 inches long with a 52 ring gauge, about 0.81 inches in diameter, and is box-pressed into a squared shape with a tapered, pointed head. Its pointed head sets it apart from the flat-capped Exclusivo, a 5.5 x 50, and it is a shorter alternative to the 6 x 52 Torpedo.
Strength and Flavor Profile
TRP lists the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Belicoso Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are cocoa, unsweetened chocolate, leather, earth, cedar, cinnamon, black pepper. Reviewers of the pointed maduro sizes describe cocoa and leather early, with cedar and cinnamon joining in the final third.
Line History and Production
Padrón introduced the 1964 Anniversary Series in 1994 to mark the company's 30th anniversary, naming it for the year José O. Padrón began making cigars in Miami. It launched as a box-pressed series when most cigars were round. Each cigar carries an individually numbered band that guards against counterfeits. The Belicoso is one of three pointed sizes in the line, alongside the Torpedo and the Piramide.
Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It
The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Belicoso Maduro suits smokers who want an aged, all-Nicaraguan blend. It works for smokers who like a tapered head that concentrates the smoke, in a format of around an hour. It pairs well with espresso or Cuban coffee, and with bourbon, aged rum or port. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
