Description

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series TAA Toro Maduro is a medium-to-full box-pressed robusto measuring 5 x 56 from Padrón's 1964 Anniversary Series. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, all aged four years and made at Padrón's own factory in Nicaragua. It is a Tobacconists' Association of America exclusive, sold only through TAA member retailers.

Wrapper and Blend

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series TAA Toro Maduro uses a sun-grown Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos, all grown and processed by Padrón and aged four years before rolling.

The maduro wrapper gives the TAA Toro its dark, leathery look; The Cigar Authority described black pepper, cedar and cocoa powder up front, salted chocolate and cashews in the middle, and caramel at the finish. The same blend is also offered with the natural wrapper.

Format and Size

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series TAA Toro Maduro measures 5 inches long with a 56 ring gauge, about 0.88 inches in diameter. Padrón calls it the Toro, but at 5 inches it smokes more like a thick robusto. The Hermoso takes the same 56 ring down to 4 inches, and the Exclusivo is the line's standard 5.5 x 50 robusto.

Strength and Flavor Profile

TRP lists the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series TAA Toro Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are cocoa powder, salted chocolate, cashew, black pepper, leather, cinnamon, caramel. Retailer notes and reviews agree on cocoa, earth and a sweet, spicy finish with a touch of pepper.

Line History and Production

Padrón introduced the 1964 Anniversary Series in 1994 to mark 30 years since José O. Padrón founded the company in Miami. He and his son Jorge built it from older tobaccos and the box press José remembered from Cuba, and each cigar carries an individually numbered band. The Toro was Padrón's first exclusive for the Tobacconists' Association of America, offered to member shops for several years before later additions such as the 1926 Serie No. 47. Padrón lists ratings for it from 2011 to 2017, up to 94 points.

Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series TAA Toro Maduro suits smokers who want a short, thick 1964 that burns cool and fits a one-hour break, and collectors who want a size most Padrón retailers cannot sell. It pairs well with espresso or dark roast, and with bourbon, rye whiskey or aged rum. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
