Description

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Maduro is a medium-to-full box-pressed toro measuring 6.5 x 46 from Padrón's 1964 Anniversary line. It is a Nicaraguan puro, with a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper over Nicaraguan binder and filler, made from tobacco aged four years. It pairs a 6.5-inch length with a moderate 46 ring gauge.

Wrapper and Blend

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Maduro uses a Nicaraguan maduro wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder and Nicaraguan long-filler tobaccos from the Estelí, Condega and Jalapa regions. Padrón ages all tobacco used in the 1964 Anniversary Series for four years before rolling.

The maduro wrapper gives this version its darker, oilier look and a sweeter, roasted side of the profile; the same blend is also offered with the sun-grown natural wrapper.

Format and Size

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Maduro measures 6.5 inches long with a 46 ring gauge, about 0.72 inches in diameter, and is box-pressed into a squared shape. It is a slim toro, sharing the 6.5-inch length of the 42-ring Superior but with a fuller 46 ring gauge, and is slimmer than the 6 x 54 Imperial.

Strength and Flavor Profile

TRP lists the Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Maduro as medium to full in strength. Its flavor notes are dark chocolate, espresso, earth, leather, molasses, black pepper. The maduro version leans darker and sweeter, with chocolate and espresso ahead of earth and leather.

Line History and Production

Padrón introduced the 1964 Anniversary Series in 1994 to mark the company's 30th anniversary, naming it for the year José O. Padrón began making cigars in Miami. It launched as a box-pressed series when most cigars were round. Each cigar carries an individually numbered band that guards against counterfeits. Cigar Aficionado rated the natural Monarca 93 points in 2021, describing a box-pressed toro with notes of macadamia nut, cocoa powder and sour cherry.

Who It Suits and How to Enjoy It

The Padron 1964 Anniversary Series Monarca Maduro suits smokers who want an aged, all-Nicaraguan blend. It works for smokers who want a long smoke without the bulk of a 50-plus ring gauge. It pairs well with espresso or Cuban coffee, and with bourbon, aged rum or port. Store it at 65 to 70 percent humidity and give it a few weeks of rest after shipping.
